CHARLIE BARTLETT (2008)
– 4 of out 5 stars

It turned out to be quite a nice movie since one of the reasons I saw was because of Tyler Hilton. And I’m totally mesmerized by him and his role, Murphy Bivens? Especially after he “cleaned up his act” to go out with Whitney. And I wasn’t the only girl in the theatre gushing over that fact.

The movie’s about Charlie, a new student at the public school after being kicked out of all the private schools he’s been in. In order to become popular, he joins hands with school bully, Murphy, and becomes the school’s self-appointed psychiatrist to the student body. He provides medicine and offers a listening ear to the teens who are depressed and troubled. Of course, the school principal starts to get suspicious and threatened when the student body listens to Charlie instead of him. The ending is rather nice, with Charlie telling everyone to be themselves and not be forced to listen to their peers and elders. I think I really loved the movie, I mean, aside the fact that Tyler Hilton’s in it.

Here’s the song performed at the ending of Charlie Bartlett. It was originally performed by Cat Stevens and here are the really meaningful lyrics.

Cat Stevens – If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out
Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
‘Cause there’s a million things to be
You know that there are

And if you want to live high, live high
And if you want to live low, live low
‘Cause there’s a million ways to go
You know that there are

[Chorus]
You can do what you want
The opportunity’s on
And if you can find a new way
You can do it today
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
You see ah ah ah
It’s easy ah ah ah
You only need to know

Well if you want to say yes, say yes
And if you want to say no, say no
‘Cause there’s a million ways to go
You know that there are

And if you want to be me, be me
And if you want to be you, be you
‘Cause there’s a million things to do
You know that there are

[Chorus]

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
‘Cause there’s a million things to be
You know that there are (x5)
