BEWARE OF DOLLS

CORALINE (2009)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars

Based on the children’s book by Neil Gailman, the movie centers on Coraline (Dakota Fanning), whose family moves to the Pink Apartments so that her parents could work on a gardening catalogue. They have no time for Coraline, who has oddball neighbours and only one other teenager around, Wybie, who she thinks is an oddball too. She finds a small locked door but is dismayed when she unlocks it to find a brick wall.

She starts having dreams of dancing mice and she makes her way through the small door, now a passageway. She finds her Other Parents, who are the livelier and warmer versions of her real parents, except for their button eyes. She makes two more trips and on her last trip, she realizes she cannot get back to the real world as her Other Mother wants to keep her in the Other World forever. With the help of a resourceful black cat and her oddball neighbours, Coraline must do whatever she can to save her real parents and get back home.
