LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (2010)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars
Love And Other Drugs is loosely based on the non-fiction book, Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy.
Set in the mid 1990s, it tells the story of a pharmaceutical salesman, Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal), who meets Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway), a young woman with early on-set Parkinson’s Disease and how both people who are not looking for love fall in love.
I’ve been waiting to watch this since the trailer was out! I think I just like to watch movies where couples meet, break up then cry a lot (like that, EVERYBODY cries). Plus, it’s Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway! Two of the most good-looking people in Hollywood now… who like getting it on in the film. Nothing full frontal but no inhibitions either. Funny bits include Maggie’s heavily-peppered dialogue regarding Viagra and itsfriend and how she told Jamie to “eat shit and die” when they first met. The scene involving Josh, Jamie’s brother, and a particular videotape is absolutely cringe-worthy. Plus, I liked it when Josh said that Jamie got “hit by a Care Bear”.
It was damn hilarious that they played Belinda Carlisle’s Heaven Is A Place On Earthwhen they introduced Viagra. The story may seem predictable towards the end but it’s always the process that counts, right?
Jamie Randall: You meet thousands of people and then you meet one person and your whole life is changed… forever.
