YOU MUST PAY FOR EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD

TRUE GRIT (2010)
– 4 and a half out of 5 stars

Mattie Ross: You must pay for everything in this world, one way and another. There is nothing free except the grace of God.

True Grit tells the story of how 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) brought Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), the man who shot her father, to justice through sheer determination. She hires US Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to find the coward who has gone into hiding in the Indian territory. They meet Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who joins them because he’s been tracking Chaney for months and intends to bring him back to Texas where he’s wanted for the murder of another man.

Well, I’ve been wanting to catch this since the trailer came out and it did not disappoint. It’s the first Western I’ve caught on the big screen and the accent can be hard to understand at first, but it was a good experience. You can say I’m pretty fascinated with the guns and the accent. Plus, Hailee Steinfeld is amazing! Mattie is tough and holds her own among the men and shows true courage even when faced with danger. I can’t believe she’s only 14 – she got to ride a horse and shoot people! Jeff Bridges really brought out his character with his deep, gravelly voice and I liked the scene where he had a shoot-out with Matt Damon! And of course, it was weird seeing Matt Damon with that much moustache.

Rooster Cogburn: Ground’s too hard. Them men wanted a decent burial, they should have got themselves killed in summer.

One thing though: no one warned me about the fingers. But it’s all right, my threshold level is much higher after 127 Hours and Winter’s Bone. Thought it didn’t win anything out of its 10 nominations at the 83rd Academy Awards, I think the film speaks for itself.
