KJ’S 10 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF 2012

2012MV1

Honourable mentions:
Seeking A Friend For The End of The World, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Looper, Ted, The Avengers, Melancholia, Rock of Ages, Wolf Children

This has been a hectic year and time is real precious! It’s a miracle I’ve even got times for the movies but you’ve got to make time if it’s worth watching. And movies are never not worth watching.

Pitch Perfect was the only movie I had seen twice in the theatres and I think that shows how much I enjoyed it and Skylar Astin. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo made me desire for Rooney Mara’s ultra-blunt bangs as well as her character’s hacking skills. 21 Jump Street was absolutely hilarious and I laughed at every turn while Moonrise Kingdom showed me a side of adolescent romance that I wished I had. The Hunger Games proved that Jennifer Lawrence is a perfect human being and Andrew Garfield brought a new sense of vulnerability to his character in The Amazing Spider-man. Thrillers like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Argo proved that a combination of good script, direction and actors still exists and are crucial to bringing audiences’ jaws to the floor. Wreck-It Ralph brought out everyone’s childhood memories, mine included and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey introduced me to the great world Tolkien has created and I look forward to more adventures in Middle Earth!

If I had to add, I would say I cried in about half of those movies up there. What can I say, I am a sponge of emotions.

Gandalf: The world is not in your maps and books. It’s out there.

**I have taken the liberty to swap one of the movies after watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at the start of 2013 and I do not regret it.**

KJ’S 10 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF 2011

Wow, it’s been a year.

Last year I think I spent a week preparing this post but this time this year, I have only three days before the end of the world year. It’s been a busy year (because work is so time consuming) and I’ve only got the energy to write mini reviews. But you get the drift – anything with lots of capital letters, exclamation marks or “OMG”s means I’m really pysched about that movie.

So, here goes (in no particular order):

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART II

source: ginervas|Tumblr

The most anticipated finale of the year~!

Harry fights his own demons. Ron and Hermione kiss. Neville Longbottom stands up for himself. McGonagall is badass. Snape has a heart. Molly Weasley says the word “Bitch”. Last of all, Voldemort hugs awkwardly.

JANE EYRE

This is the first movie that introduced Michael Fassbender to me (not including 300 and Inglourious Basterds) and my, my, what a fine Mr. Rochester he plays. Mia Wasikowska was lovely as Jane Eyre too. Each time they appeared together, there were sparks flying off the screen.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy!

The outtakes for this film were full of bromance and even their interviews were full of it. It really set up the back story for the X-Men movies really well and I do hope the rumours of a sequel are true!

ONE DAY

I really, really liked the book and I don’t care if you didn’t like the movie. To me, the casting was perfect and beautiful. Loving the year they met and that of Paris.

Emma Morley: ‘Live each day as if it’s your last’, that was the conventional advice, but really, who had the energy for that? What if it rained or you felt a bit glandy? It just wasn’t practical. Better by far to simply try and be good and courageous and bold and to make a difference. Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you. Go out there with your passion and your electric typewriter and work hard at…something. Change lives through art maybe. Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things. Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.

BRIDESMAIDS

As funny as it was, it was also very real – the feelings of what goes on in the mind of a still-single BFF when the other BFF finally gets married… and there’s someone else fighting to be in your position as the prime BFF.

Melissa McCarthy was a scene-stealer; whether she was spewing “lava”, organizing fight club, stealing puppies or dispensing words of wisdom. Kristen Wiig was just hilarious in that scene, trying to get the attention of Officer Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd).

Annie Walker: I feel like her life is going off and getting perfect and mine is just like phrrr..

DRIVE

One of my favourite scenes from the movie! (…right before he pummeled the other guy to death)

Ryan Gosling – need I really say more? Strong, silent and charming exhibit of a man.

YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE

Textbook scene. Enough said.

THE KING’S SPEECH

This year’s big Oscar winner!

Watching Bertie slowly overcome his stutter and cussing was a real joy. Once again, British humour is present! I really enjoyed Geoffrey Rush’s performance as Bertie’s voice coach.

TRUE GRIT

Another Oscar nominee that introduced the lovely Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross. She really held her own against Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon – and she got to hang out with them!

Loved the scene where Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) carried Mattie after the horse gave out to treat her snake bite.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE.

Hannah Weaver: Seriously?! It’s like you’re photoshopped!

Another Ryan Gosling movie!

It’s one of my favourite romantic comedies and I really liked that scene where Hannah (Emma Stone) rushes into the bar and plants a big one on Jacob (Gosling) and later when they talked the night away, explored his $2000 massage chair and fell asleep.

Honourable mentions:
Attack The Block, Super 8, Win Win, Rango, Real Steel, The Help, Margin Call.

KJ’S 10 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF 2011

Top Row: Kick-Ass, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Whip It, Toy Story 3
Bottom Row: Easy A, Inception, The Town, Let Me In, Monga

Decided to do things a little differently this year, especially so when I’ve got my own Tumblr account. There’s everything there!

The following screencaps and gifs all are from Tumblr!

INCEPTION

THE TOWN

THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Eduardo Saverin: Sorry, but my Prada’s at the cleaners along with my hoodie and my ‘fuck-you’ flip-flops, you pretentious douchebag!

Tyler Winklevoss: I’m six-foot-five, 220 pounds, and there’s two of me.

WHIP IT

EASY A

Brandon: Is there an Olive here?
Rosemary: There’s a whole jar of them in the fridge!

TOY STORY 3

KICK-ASS

Plus, some of the cuter characters…

THE SWITCH

Wally: Are you ready for the best duck in the whole wide world, huh?
Sebastian: I can’t eat duck
Wally: W-what do you mean you can’t eat duck?
Sebastian: Wally, do you know what they do to ducks at the waterfowl farms?
Cassie: Sweetie, I think that’s veal.  You’re thinking of veal.
Sebastian: No, I read about the ducks too. They force-feed the ducks 7 pounds of food a day.  A plastic tube, they drill them to their throat. Ducks get this liver disease called hepatic lipidosis and they can’t walk.  Nature’s in crisis and there is only one mammal to blame.

DESPICABLE ME

RAPUNZEL: A TANGLED TALE

I guess that’s all for 2010!

I’m happy with this post though it’s quite lengthy. I spent a week on it, so I hope whoever’s reading will like it!

Top row: ZombielandInglourious BasterdsUpThe HangoverConfessions Of A Shopaholic
Bottom row: AvatarWatchmen(500) Days Of SummerHarry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceFantastic Mr. Fox

Okay, I think I’m getting lazy so I’ll just post a couple of quotes.

[Zombieland]
Columbus: Someone’s ear is in danger of having hair brushed over it.

[Inglourious Basterds]
Lt. Aldo Raine: Frankly, watching Donny beat Nazis to death is the closest we ever get to goin’ to the movies.
Lt. Aldo Raine: (calling offscreen) DONNY!
Sgt. Donny Donowitz: Yeah?
Lt. Aldo Raine: We got a German here who wants to die for his country! Oblige him!

[Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince]
Harry Potter: Well you know… she has nice… skin.
Ron Weasley: So you think he is going out with her because she has nice skin?
Harry Potter: Well, I dunno, I’m just saying it could be a contributing factor.
Ron Weasley: Hermione’s got nice skin. You know, as far as skin goes.
Harry Potter: I-I’ve never thought about it before. But now that you mention it, yeah. Very nice.
Harry Potter: (long pause) … I think I’ll be going to bed now.

[(500) Days Of Summer]
Tom: Paul, seriously…
Paul: Did you bang her?
Tom: No!
Paul: Blow job?
Tom: No!
Paul: Hand job?
Tom: No, Paul, no jobs. I’m still unemployed. We just kissed.

[The Hangover]
Alan Garner: Can I ask you another question?
Lisa: Sure.
Alan Garner: You probably get this a lot. This isn’t the real Caesar’s Palace, is it?
Lisa: What do you mean?
Alan Garner: Did, umm… did Caesar live here?
Lisa: No.
Alan Garner: I didn’t think so.

[Fantastic Mr. Fox]
(Kristofferson comes to Ash’s defense after seeing Beaver’s son forcing him to eat mud)
Kristofferson: Don’t do that.
Beaver’s Son: (Looking at Kristofferson’s feet) Why’d you take your shoes off?
Kristofferson: So I don’t break your nose when I kick it.

Yayy! Looking forward to more good movies in 2010!

KJ’S 10 FAVOURITE MOVIES OF 2008

In chronological order:

1) ATONEMENT

Guess I’m a sucker for doomed romances, aren’t I?
Cecilia: I love you. I’ll wait for you. Come back. Come back to me.

2) JUNO

Bleeker: Did you put like, a hundred tic-tacs in my mailbox?
Juno: Um, yeah that was me.
Bleeker: Why?
Juno: Well you know, because they’re your fav, and I figured out you could never have enough of your favorite one calorie breath mints.

3) CHARLIE BARTLETT

Teen movie that focused on the dangers of popularity and acceptance and it got overly serious at times (Hello? The principal carrying a rifle?), but nonetheless, one of my favourite coming-of-age movies. Oh, not to forget Tyler Hilton!!

Principal Gardner: Charlie, there are more important things than popularity!
Charlie Bartlett: Like what? Cause I’m seventeen. And right now, popularity’s pretty damn important!
Principal Gardner: Like what you do with that popularity.

4) WANTED
Cool visuals and great effects. The magic ‘X’ and the traceless bullets. My favourite scene? Check it out here.
Wesley: What the fuck have you done lately?

5) HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY

When the prequel came out, I didn’t have a good first impression of it. I mean, I can tell a lot of people don’t get it. I didn’t but now I do.

Most entertaining scene? Here!

6) WALL-E

A robot in barren Planet Earth. It’s so endearing and determined to move Eve, a foreign robot. The human spirit featured in the movie is touching and motivating. From Wall-E: “Ta-daa!”

7) TWILIGHT

100-year-old vampire, Edward Cullen, finally finds his soulmate in the form of Bella Swan, who has the sweetest scent and makes him want to protect her and kill her at the same time. And of course, Robert Pattinson!!

Bella: Are you going to tell me how you stopped the van?
Edward: Yeah. Um… I had an adrenaline rush. It’s very common. You can Google it.

8) BOLT

I think the only reason for this was RHINO!!! Fat hamsters rule the day!!
Rhino: All my training has prepared me for this moment. [rushes towards guard]
Rhino: Die! Diiie!

9) ANGUS, THONGS AND PERFECT SNOGGING

Another coming-of-age movie, but in the British aspect. Being a 14-year-old girl isn’t easy; you’re stuck in the middle of teenhood and girlhood. The story revolves around Georgia’s journal entries, what better way to know more?

10) NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST

A sort-of love-at-first-sight story with many twists and turns. It makes you want to find one of your own.
Norah: Are you sad that we missed it?
Nick: We didn’t miss it. This *is* it.
