MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012)
4 and a half out of 5 stars
It’s been a long time since I laughed and cried in the same movie and Moonrise Kingdom has got to be one of my favourite movies this year.
Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play Sam Shakusky and Suzy Bishop, two pen pals who made a secret pact to elope in the summer of 1965 on the island of New Penzance. They plan to reach a secluded cove and camp there. The elopement of the young lovers send the scouts camp and the girl’s parents into a frenzy as they try to find them before a hurricane makes its way towards the island.
Sam: I love you, but you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Suzy: I love you too.
I like that scene when the young couple find their secret cove and start to make declarations of love to each other and dance to fancy chanson on the record player. Gilman dances wildly while Hayward tries to be as sophisticated as young girls wanted to be at that age. The cat in the basket deserves some sort of prize for being cute throughout the movie.
Jared Gilman is such a precious human being! He’s really sweet and he really tries his best to fight for his and Suzy’s happiness even though his size really puts him at an disadvantage. The ending was really sweet even though I was afraid the climax at the church might end differently.
I liked the start and the end of the film where they played classical music from Benjamin Britten, where each instrument in the track was introduced by a child. Very lovely!
Sam: Why do you consider me your enemy?
Redford: Because your girlfriend stabbed me in the back with lefty scissors.
Sam: She’s my wife now.

Anyway, I’ve just seen Zombieland and it totally kicks ass! It takes place in a post-apocalyptic America where there’s a zombie virus and almost everyone has become those filthy flesh eaters. There are only a handful of humans left and one of them is Columbus, who probably survived due to his lack of human interaction and his book of rules. He meets Tallahassee who’s a mean zombie killer with a vulnerability for Twinkies. While on a Twinkie mission, they encounter Wichita and her sister, Little Rock, whom they join forces with after several misunderstandings. Together, they form a formidable group against the disgustingly undead.
Seriously, of all the monsters, zombies are the worst! They enjoy human Happy Meals, suck human bone marrow and absolutely crave all of your human juices. Eewww! The initial onslaught of bloody insides are not the most comfortable opening scenes but you’ll start to laugh it off after a few minutes. Throughout the movie, I was greatly entertained by Columbus’ narration and his rules. Some of those mentioned in the movie are: –
Rule #1: Cardio
Rule #2: Double Tap
Rule #3: Beware of Bathrooms
Rule #4: Seatbelts
Don’t Be A Hero
Rule #18: Limber Up
Rule #22: When In Doubt, Know Your Way Out
Rule #31: Check the Back Seat
Rule #32: Enjoy The Little Things
(More rules can be found here.)
You can see these rules popping up on the screen, like mental lessons, especially Rule #2. The surprise cameo by a well-known actor almost steals the show and just adds more laughs to the zombie comedy. All was well until I got frightened by an old female zombie at the Haunted House. I screamed a little but luckily, my scream was drowned out by the gunshots that followed. Phew. The climax at the theme park was good and hilarious at the same time. I wouldn’t mind watching it again.
There’s news of a sequel in 3D! Plus, Jesse Eisenberg is kinda adorable in his own geeky, neurotic way. =)
FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009)
– 4 and a half out of 5 stars
This movie is really fantastic!
The movie really starts when Mr. Fox moves his family to a tree opposite the businesses of Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Mr. Fox decides to raid their farms for livestock and precious apple cider but these mean businessmen are not to be messed with. Soon, the farmers discover there’s a fox in their midst and camp out near the foxes’ trees to kill Mr. Fox. Then the foxes and the possum, Kylie, start digging – and that’s my favourite part! They are really vigourous at digging! As the farmers use larger and more powerful tools to dig them out, they dig further underground to escape them. He’s a really smart and charming fox!
The stakes get higher when Mr. Fox’s nephew gets caught and the final battle is really AMAZING! All the underground animals use their talents according to their latin species name, and it turns out the badger is a demolition specialist! Watch out for fiery acorns!
You can go to the official website to play their game of Whackbat. Seriously, besides the main guy whacking the bat, I have no idea what the other players are doing.
