WE’RE A TIME BOMB.

THE AVENGERS (2012)
– 4 and a half out of 5 stars

By now, who hasn’t seen The Avengers?

So Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, assembles Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow to form the Avengers, in order to stop Loki from enslaving the human race.

Iron Man: If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it.

The action scenes were to die for, especially when they were showing off and fighting among themselves. What can I say, I love havoc. I didn’t watch the Iron Man movies so I wasn’t introduced to Black Widow earlier but I was pretty impressed with ScarJo and her dexterity. Guess I should make time to watch those two Iron Man movies before they release the other Marvel movies. I didn’t like the aliens much which I attribute to their disgusting vertebrae structure.

Hulk: Puny God.

Funny scenes are aplenty, with each superhero trying to outsmart and outwit each other. Most of it came from the cocky billionaire philanthropist Iron Man and the Hulk – both created a good bromance considering both of them share a science background. Of course, my fangirl heart melts whenever they offer a helping hand to each other.

Needless to say, STAY FOR THE EXTRA SCENE after the first credits. You’ll get a glimpse of who’s the next villian now that Loki’s back at Asgard, hopefully with some TLC. For those living outside the US, don’t bother staying till the end of the credits for that Shawarma diner scene.

IS THIS A TEST?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2011)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) has always wanted to join the army but his small built and poor health has always deterred him. His lucky day arrives when he chances upon Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), who recruits Rogers into the “super-soldier” experiment and he ultimately becomes Captain America. His help is needed when by Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), leader of the Nazi’s experimental division HYDRA, plans to unleash their WMD on different parts of the world.

Hayley Atwell is stunning! Love the ’40s makeup and outfits. Plus, she shoots well! Chris Evans was just really hot with all his muscles and running and fighting. I really liked the scene where his character, Rogers, went towards the grenade when everyone else went away. It was also really cute that he misunderstood the term “fondue”. It was a really wholesome movie though there were some sad parts (Bucky!) and it has made me really psyched about The Avengers. I should really find time to watch Iron Man soon. Amanda Righetti from The Mentalist has a bit part this movie too!

STAY TILL AFTER THE CREDITS TO CATCH THE TEASER FOR THE AVENGERS, COMING YOUR WAY NEXT YEAR!

EVERYBODY WANTS A THRILL

THE LOSERS (2010)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars

Caught The Losers the other day and man, thank goodness for some ACTION!

Five members of an elite squad were sent on a search-and-destroy mission in Bolivia, but decided to abort the mission when they find children on site. However, they were betrayed by a powerful enemy, Max, who refused to abort the mission and even blew up the chopper that were supposed to bring the team back. They were presumed dead but they are very much alive because they let the children board the chopper instead. While in hiding, they are approached by the mysterious Aisha (Zoe Saldana), who smuggles them back into the USA and join forces to destroy their common enemy, Max.

Chris Evans as Jensen is really funny! Liked the part when he went to steal the algorithm and the ‘invisible gun’ thing he had. But my favourite character is Cougar! He speaks little but is such a sharp shooter! He helped Jensen with his ‘invisible gun’ because he (like what the poster describes) specializes in long-range eliminations. Plus, Zoe Saldana really kicks ass?! Her legs can twist, hook and kick really well! Way to show them guys how to kick ass.

SILVER IS THE NEW BLACK

FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (2007)
– 3 out of 5 stars

The Silver Surfer is so cool! With his powerful surfboard and all. The story is quite average, it doesn’t get me very ‘high’ but the effects are great. Lots of laughs and I find it irritating that they keep focusing on ‘The Wedding of the Year’ between Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. All these publicity reminded me of Spider-man 3, which had media-loving Spidey with a huge ego.

Enjoyable.

STARDUST IN SPACE

SUNSHINE (2007)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars

After a long long wait, I finally caught my movie… and a FREE one at that! Thanks to my sister who won 2 complimentary tickets to Sunshine.According to the story, the Sun is dying and so will Earth; thus this group of eight scientists and astronauts are sent on a mission to the Sun. This is their last attempt to ignite the core, after mining all over Earth for materials and a failed mission seven years ago. After entering the deadzone (place where messages can no longer be transmitted), they find Icarus I – the spaceship that failed to re-ignite the Sun seven years ago. After an ‘informed’ decision, they decided to make a detour to Icarus I. Due to careless mistakes, mechanical problems and casualties arose.

This was really scary mainly for the climax that occurred three-quarter-way into the show. Some Freddy Kreuger-wannabe appeared and scared the hell outta me; this is one of the reasons why space-related movies are scary. It’s kinda claustrophobic in the spaceship, and you’re out alone in space with nowhere to run and some “enlightened”thing comes for you with a rotating blade. *shivers* Star Wars is still good in the sense that the force is with me and it’s entirely fictatious, unlike Sunshine, which brings an element of realism into it.
