– 3 and a half out of 5 stars
Burlesque is about Ali (Christina Aguilera), a small town Iowa girl who dreams of being a singer. She leaves for Los Angeles and stumbles across Burlesque, a club that is an inspired musical revue. Ali dreams of joining the crew and starts her path from the bar to the stage. She impresses Tess (Cher) with her voice and becomes Burlesque’s main attraction, restoring the club to its former glory.
Despite its lacklustre reviews, the movie is actually quite a nice watch. Christina Aguilera is amazing as usual, her voice is soulful and rich and I think she should stick to her Stripped and Back to Basics days because it works for her. Bionic just didn’t work out. She co-wrote four songs from the soundtrack and I liked the energetic “Show Me How You Burlesque”. There’s plenty of sequins and glitter in their costumes and it’s all bright bulbs and strobe lighting so the each time a song comes up, you can’t look away. Plus, there’s Cam Gigandet in a yummy role and OMG he wears eyeliner! Eric Dane aka McSteamy is McDoucheBag in this role so there’s not much to watch.

As at time of post, Diane Warren won Best Original Song for “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me” performed by Cher at the 68th Golden Globes Awards.
VALENTINE’S DAY (2010)
– 3 and a half out of 5 stars
I saw Valentine’s Day and I think it’s slightly better than New York, I Love You!
It’s another anthology of love stories, people connected in one way or another – friends, colleagues, lovers, strangers etc. Except that this movie happens all in a day – Valentine’s Day. There are many familiar faces – Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Alba, etc. Only thing is happy beginnings didn’t turn out to be happy endings, while not-so-happy beginnings turn out happier.
There is the mini-competition between McDreamy (Dempsey) and McSteamy (Dane) – I choose McSteamy cos McDreamy still plays a boring doctor who does the worst thing ever! There’s the bimbotic Taylor Swift who dots every sentences with “like…” and dances like a crazy girl. The story revolving around the other teenage couple – Emma Roberts and Carter Jenkins – were super funny! They were planning to have sex during lunch and it all goes wrong when Stone’s mother comes back and sees him – almost naked! Anne Hathaway is very interesting with the use of weird accents and the creative use of rubber bands – *snap* while part-timing as a adult phone entertainer. Jennifer Garner totally rocks as a waitress (chopped pig’s testicles, anyone?) and with the baseball bat!
And here’s my favourite quote from the movie/trailer:
Reporter: So, how do you guys feel about each other?
Felicia: Oh my gosh, I totally love him!
Willy: And I’m crazy about her.
Felicia: See, I even wrote his number in my hand.
Reporter: There you have it, young love. Full of promise, full of hope, ignorant of reality.
