THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART II (2012)
4 out of 5 stars

Caught this on 22 November 2012 – the opening day in Singapore!

Yes, I am very particular about catching all my Twilight‘s and Harry Potter‘s on opening day because I’m an opening day bitch! And you can never go wrong watching on opening day because it will be super crowded (so book your tickets early!) and the energy inside the theatre is madness! The happy parts, sad parts and funny parts are all amplified when you’re inside a theatre on opening day. The only downside, probably, is when people laugh too much and you miss out what’s on the screen – so you have to watch it again.

Back to the movie – BELLA IS A VAMPIRE!

Her pupils are blood red and we experience her heightened senses by seeing lots of dust in the air and everything else is high definition. Her hunting trip turned out to be quite funny because I was affected by a gif/comment I saw on Tumblr and I cannot get it out of my mind.

Bella Swan: Jake, you really do stink!

Renesmee Cullen was a little creepy because they had to superimpose Mackenzie Foy’s face into various stages of child development. Most of the time it was weird, except when Mackenzie Foy was playing her own age.

This final instalment also brings lots of new faces and the one I was MOST looking forward to see vamping it up is Lee Pace! Doesn’t he look hot as the vampire Garrett? And the tension between Garrett and Kate is just crazy hot! Too bad there weren’t more scenes.

As most of you all have heard, THERE IS A TWIST ENDING!

As I liked to remain spoiler-free till I watched the movie myself (not easy considering the movie opened a week earlier in the USA) so I gasped when I saw the first death. And then I gasped till it sounded more like a deeper-than-usual intake of breath.

But it was a good twist and I guess non-Twihards who were in the theatre actually stopped grumbling.

Jacob Black: So, should I call you “Dad” now?
Edward Cullen: No

The final scene between Bella and Edward was so sweet!

And I liked the ending credits where they introduced all the actors and the character they played along Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years (Part II). Mad love for the song.

Bella Swan: Now you know. Nobody’s ever loved anybody as much as I love you.
Edward Cullen: There’s one exception.

THEY GOT MARRIED… FINALLY

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART I (2011)
– 4 out of 5 stars

(This post is long overdue – but indulge me)

The movie finally opened on November 24, 2011!

It’s been a long time waiting and it’s still only half of the final instalment. And yes… Edward and Bella finally get married and have sex!

Unfortunately, most of the sex scenes and birthing scene were tamed down to fit into the PG-13 rating. It was too tamed down for me cos everything seems to be in flashes and before you know it, poof, Renesmee Carlie Cullen is born.

Charlie Swan: I know Edward will be a good husband. I know this, because I’m a cop. Cops know things. And I know how to hunt someone down to the end of the earth… I also know how to use a gun.

WEDDING OF THE YEAR!

But the most WOW! part of the entire movie was THE WEDDING. OMG! The gown was just amazingly beautiful! The decor was breathtaking too. All the trees and draping flowers were just beautiful. Though nothing can draw attention away from the bride and Charlie Swan is possibly the best movie father this year…

Bella Swan: Don’t let me fall, Dad.
Charlie Swan: Never

One more thing I loved was the toiletries bag that Bella brought on her honeymoon! Sometimes you have to admit that style comes with money… Cullen money.

Jacob gets a meatier role because he has assumed his role as an Alpha to protect Bella and her unborn child. He’s finally become a man! And let’s not talk about what happens in Part II after he has imprinted. Awkward.

Obviously I can’t wait to see Part II where our dear Bella finally becomes invincible and even fairer with yellow/red eyes. Her special vampire ability. Her hunting skills. I hope they show the scene where she beats Emmett at arm wrestling! Plus, Lee Pace will be in it!

IT IS IN THE HEART THAT ALL WARS ARE WON

THE LAST AIRBENDER (2010)
– 3 out of 5 stars

In The Last Airbender, Aang is released with the help of siblings, Katara and Sokka, from the Southern Water Tribe, after being enclosed in ice for a century. Aang is the last Airbender and also the only Avatar that can control all the elements – Air, Water, Earth and Fire. Aang realizes that his tribe was destroyed by the power-hungry Firebenders who feared the Airbenders would overcome them. With the help of Katara and Sokka, Aang travels to the Northern Water Tribes to master the art of Waterbending since he left his Tribe before he could master all the elements. A war breaks out and it is up to Aang to embrace his destiny as the Avatar to save the members of the Northern Water Tribe.

Naturally, this is the first of the a series since Aang would need to master the other elements – Earth and Fire. But the reviews haven’t been really kind but I do hope there will be sequels. The Waterbending effects are pretty cool so it seems to be my element of choice at the moment. Earthbending seems cool too, judging from the sneak peek in the movie. Princess Yue is really pretty, even though she has white hair because her eyes are in such a pretty shade of blue. Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Cullen in The Twilight Saga) stars as Sokka and has more screen time than his vampire alter ego, which is good because he is often portrayed as the weird vampire even though he is quite cool in the books. He also acts as some form of comic relief in the movie. 3 out of 5 stars.

Here’s a funny clip with Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz (Katara) promoting the Nickelodeon KCAs 2010:

CHOICE

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE (2010)
– 4 and a half out of 5 stars

YAYYY!

I caught The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on its opening day yesterday – 1 July 2010!

I think it’s much nicer than The Twilight Saga: New Moon! Considering that I’m no longer that Twi-crazy as I was when Twilight first came out two years ago and I was busy devouring the books back then, I think I’m making a rather rational opinion here.

In Eclipse, missing people and mysterious killings hit Seattle while Victoria is still in her quest for revenge. Bella is in danger but this time, she has the protection of the Cullens and the Wolf Pack. She also makes an important decision regarding her mortality and has to choose between her love for Edward and friendship for Jacob.

Jacob Black: Let’s face it, I’m hotter than you.

It was pretty obvious I was sitting in a cinema full of Team Jacobs cos when Jacob appeared (with his shirt on), there were cat calls and wolf calls from behind. Whereas for Edward, there was just giggling. Even Bella doesn’t giggle. There was rousing support for the dialogue between Edward and Bella since people who have read Eclipse would know that one of the most highly anticipated scenes occurred in the tent before the fight began. Almost everyone laughed when Jacob said to Edward in his face, “I’M HOTTER THAN YOU.” Likewise, the laughters were there when Edward grunted “Doesn’t he have a shirt?” when shirtless Jacob comes onscreen. One of the funniest part has to come from Bella when she tries to punch Jacob in the face when he tried to kiss her, I guess Team Switzerland didn’t suck as much before, seeing she couldn’t cause any physical hurt to both guys.

Jacob Black: I kissed Bella, and she broke her hand punching my face.

And I don’t think I have ever supported Team Jacob as much as I was watching Eclipse. It all started in New Moon but I was wondering why Jacob didn’t fight for his chance to be with Bella once Edward was back. In Eclipse, you can see him really putting much effort to stop Bella from becoming a vampire and to let her see there she has a choice – keep her heart beating and be with him. But for the record, I’m Team Edward. Like what Jacob says, Bella can love both Edward and Jacob, just like you can be Team Edward and Team Jacob at the same time.

Edward Cullen: Bella, would you please stop trying to take your clothes off?

The opening sequence is enough to draw you in on the vampire army of newborns, but I guess it got waylaid by the requisite meadow scene Edward and Bella shares. Each time Riley or other newborns come onscreen, the tension is there and the fight at the end was definitely action-packed. Lots of decapitation – that’s how you ‘kill’ a vampire – before burning them. Don’t tell me you don’t remember how Alice came from the back and ripped James’ head out of his socket back in Twilight. This time, it will be much more obvious cos they come with visual and sound effects.

Eclipse also sees the introduction of Leah and Seth Clearwater into the Wolf Pack. Both will have much more significant roles in Breaking Dawn but it was nice to see Leah because she’s the only female in the Wolf Pack. There is also the back story on Rosalie and Jasper so that should be interesting. Though it was sped up and you couldn’t enjoy how Jasper felt when he finally met Alice at the bar. The scene between Bella and Charlie is so funny, just like how any birds and the bees talk would end up. Charlie’s reaction to Bella’s exclamation is priceless! Oh, and look out for the scene when Edward proposes – there was applause in the audience!

LUNA NUEVA

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (2009)
– 4 out of 5 stars

Woohoo! New Moon did not disappoint!

Seriously, I wasn’t that into New Moon as I did with Twilight (which would explain the lack of posts regarding New Moon) because there had really too much publicity. Plus, the number of reviews I’ve read that said it sucked – countless. But as a slightly more objective viewer this year, I think it’s not bad.

Basically, it’s Bella’s 18th birthday and the Cullens have offered to celebrate it for her. But a papercut proves fatal when Jasper (the newest “vegetarian” vampire) tries to attack Bella. Edward, in order to protect Bella, leaves Forks and Bella utterly heartbroken. She seeks comfort in Jacob Black, who turns out to be a werewolf. But a series of unexpected events occur and Bella has to rush to Italy to save Edward from destruction.

I thought the part where Edward left Bella was really, really sad. My tears welled up slowly as the scenes progressed, with Bella becoming less of a person. Though I still think the book expressed the sadness better. When Jacob appeared, Bella was less mopey and I don’t know how she can concentrate on her lines when she’s seeing so much muscle. There was a scene when Bella fell from the bike and Jacob was like, “you’re bleeding” and proceeded to take his shirt off to clean off the blood. Hello?! Wouldn’t there be more blood since your heart is beating faster? Anyway, the wolves are pretty scary at first. I got a shock when I heard the first growl. It was LOUD.

(There’s definitely a lot more Team Jacob after this instalment cos I saw (crazy) people trying to hold Taylor Lautner’s cardboard hands. But there were (crazy) people trying to hug Robert Pattinson’s cardboard body too…)

There were comical elements too, especially Jasper. Somehow, I don’t think they explained much about the wolves or the Volturi – maybe that will come in Eclipse. Marcus and Caius (other members of the Volturi) seem bored while Aro enjoys decapitating vampires. However, the fight scenes involving them are ground-breaking, like, literally. Lastly, I think the ending was perfect! Girls (most of them) will definitely swoon at Edward’s last sentence.

And I’m glad the soundtrack was integrated into the film nicely! They played The Killers’ A White Demon Love Song during the first half of the credits – hurray!

P.S.
Eclipse opens June 30, 2010 in the USA.

CREPÚSCULO

TWILIGHT (2008)
– 4 out of 5 stars

OMG! I don’t really know how to phrase this properly but…
I WATCHED TWILIGHT LAST NIGHT!

Everything’s kinda hazy and I definitely need to relive those memories. But otherwise, I thought the movie was moving at a rather slow pace until the climax, of course. The 122 minutes just passed unknowingly and it is different from the book, in terms of certain dialogue/scenes and some details that only readers of the book would know. =)

First of all, I LOVE VAMPIRE BASEBALL! Man, I tell you, it’s way cooler than Quidditch (which can be kind of dizzy, even though Cedric Diggory was the Captain of his team). Second of all, the fight scene at the ballet studio was simply thrilling! Anticipating their actions, reactions and I didn’t know Alice did that! Oh, I like the part where Edward goes to school with Bella with his shades – so cool! The scene where Edward saves Bella from the truck didn’t disappoint too!

I can hear gasping and muffled screams when Edward appeared for the first time and it was funny to see how he used his ability (FYI: He can read minds except Bella’s) in the carpark against Mike and Bella, and his scenes with Charlie (Bella’s father). But the parts in the forest may shock/scare or even become funny when Edward displays his strengths. It was more to the shock part for me cos it didn’t feel like it did when I read the book. Edward’s stares are disturbing at first, but later, it just feels funny. But I guess it’s because Robert Pattinson’s playing a tortured character who’s in love with Bella and yet, his vampiric nature wants to make Bella a meal (oh, look out for the ballet scene!). The prom was played out nicely – loved that pavillion – and the soundtrack was fully utilized in the film! Otherwise, I was slightly saddened by their short-lived scene in the meadows, the diner scene and the development of their romance but I guess it was hard work trying to condense everything into 2 hours. But I can tell they edited some parts out!!

All in all, I think the book is better (as with most book-to-movie adaptations) but it feels great to have your favourite books come to life on film and have leads with such chemistry play your favourite characters.

(But as a crazed fan, it’s 4 and a half out of 5 stars)

I realized after watching the movie, that I was watching it on the original US release date (12.12.2008) before it was brought forward! YESSSS!!!
