WATCH IT BECAUSE…
1) Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes and directs.
2) How “love at first sight” is bullshit.
3) How pretty girls who’ve got the “package” are bullshit. You can talk about vacuuming with me anytime you want. Guys who vacuum are sexy as hell.
4) Get an inside look at how guys think and work the crowd. Well, guys who quote the below…

Don Jon: There’s only a few things I really care about in life. My body. My pad. My ride. My family. My church. My boys. My girls. My porn.

WHAT MAKES A DRIVER

Rush2013RUSH (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

Still having F1 fever? Then this is the movie you should watch.

James Hunt: The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel. It’s a wonderful way to live. It’s the only way to drive.

This is the story of the rivalry/friendship (blurry lines between these two, if you ask me) between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 1970s.

Cue 70s hair! Hunt is more charismatic and knows his way amongst women (hello, Natalie Dormer!) while Lauda is more keen on the sport and improving his car to become a better driver. Their personal lives are also interesting to watch especially when you see how different Hunt and Lauda approach women.

Back then, F1 racing can be fatal and I guess it makes it more thrilling to watch. It’s even astonishing to see Lauda back in the race after suffering third-degree burns six weeks later. The movie climaxes at the 1976 Japan race where race conditions are not optimal and it tests the lengths these men would go to win the championship. Personally, it was a good watch and those engines really revved me up.

Niki Lauda: A wise man can learn more from his enemies than a fool from his friends.

HIDDEN MEMORIES OF MAGIC

TMI1THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

Jace Wayland: My hair is naturally blonde… Just for the record.

Based on The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, we are introduced to the world of Shadowhunters through Clary (Lily Collins), who discovers she’s one of them on her 18th birthday. Her mother is missing and her world is invaded by monsters searching for the Mortal Cup, which has the power of creating more Shadowhunters, allowing humans who drink from the Cup to become half-Angels.

Clary Fray: Is this the part where you start tearing off strips of your shirt to bind my wounds?
Jace Wayland: If you wanted me to rip my clothes off, you should have just asked.

It is pretty obvious Jace has a sense of humour and he has some of the best lines in the movie. I have never read the book but if what I’ve seen is already so rich, I’ll bet what I’ll read will definitely make me go crazy. The movie sure doesn’t shy from kid-friendly content because the audience is introduced to demon dogs early in the movie. Scariest canine ever – comparable to those vampire dogs from Blade: Trinity.

Clary Fray: Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?
Jace Wayland: Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself.
Clary Fray: At least, you don’t have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland.
Jace Wayland: Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting

There’s a slight twist towards the end which leads me to think that only Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Lena Headey could produce such beautiful offspring. The wonder of genes. Godfrey Gao stars as Magnus Bane, a party-loving and pants-hating warlock. Hurray for Asian talent in such a big production! Totally looking forward to the sequel because there are simply too many books in the series!

One last thing: how hot is Aidan Turner?!

TMI-Luke

Aidan Turner as Luke Garroway

Luke Garroway: I’m a werewolf, not a Golden Retriever.

JUSTICE FOREVER

kickass2KICK-ASS 2 (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

Yeah! Finally got to watch this movie that I’ve been anticipating since I watched the trailers. My favourite line has to be:

Hit Girl: Act like a bitch, get slapped like a bitch.

Kick Ass is back and he’s joining up with a group of similar-minded vigilantes to fight crime in New York City. Meanwhile, Red Mist is intent on revenge against Kick Ass for his father’s death and reincarnates himself as The Motherfucker along with his group of super villains.

They are still humans but they dress up as costumed superheroes to fight for justice and for revenge – depending which side you’re on. There are new characters like Colonel Stars and Stripes, Night Bitch and Dr. Gravity. Personally, I find the costumed couple pretty hilarious because everyone knows the power of a loaded handbag or a charged-up baseball bat.

Sometimes, I get a little teary-eyed while watching. Maybe it’s because these so-called superheroes are just teenagers who are trying to make a difference but people around them get hurt instead. Maybe it’s because they willingly give themselves to protect their city. It also begins the age-old question if we are allowed to take justice in own hands. Personally, I still prefer the first movie because there are more fighting scenes with Hit Girl though this one is not bad. Go adrenaline rush!

No one ever really retires, do they?

The group of Retired and Extremely Dangerous retirees are back this time to locate a nuclear weapon and prevent it from going off. It’s amazing how people of a certain age can still handle firearms with so much composure.

One of the best things is watching deal with able-bodied young men as if they were imbeciles. The next best thing is LEE BYUNG-HUN! He’s the youngest among them so he has the most action scenes. Eye candy!

Marvin: If there’s one thing I know, it’s women and covert operations.
Frank: Marvin, that’s two things.
Han Cho Bai: No, grasshopper. It is not.

PACIFIC RIM (2013)
5 out of 5 stars

THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST MOVIE I’VE SEEN THIS YEAR.

Set in the 2020s, Earth is at war with the Kaijus (Japanese for ‘giant monsters’) that have emerged from a portal in the floor of the Pacific Ocean. The humans have created Jaegers (German for ‘hunters’), giant robots controlled by two pilots whose minds are connected via a neural bridge. As the kaijus evolve and become larger and more powerful, more Jaegers are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. In their last bid to fight off the Kaijus before they take over Earth, a group of Jaeger pilots from different backgrounds gather for the final fight.

Raleigh Becket: There are things you can’t fight – acts of God. You see a hurricane coming, you get out of the way. But when you’re in a Jaeger, you can finally fight the hurricane. You can win.

The Jaegers are really magnificent! Every fight scene is interesting to watch because different Jaegers are operated by different people and each person reacts differently to attacks. But I was really absorbed when Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) were engaged in stick fighting to test their compatibility. #mindblown

Mako Mori is super badass! No doubt raised by another badass, Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Warning: DO NOT TOUCH HIM!

Charlie Day provides most of the comic relief alongside Ron Perlman. My only grumble is that the version I watched dubbed over Hunnam’s and Elba’s Japanese speaking parts. What’s a girl got to do to hear hot people speak Japanese?

It’s my first time watching Charlie Hunnam on the big screen. He’s soooo fine! He’s soooo clean-shaven! He’s English! I’m totally Mako when she glances through the peephole. For those who don’t know, Charlie Hunnam is known for playing Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. He’s also usually bearded. But he’s still sooooo hot!

The sequel to the 2010 movie has created more crazies because everyone’s crazy about minions now. Anyway, in this sequel, Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to deal with a new criminal who has stolen a chemical compound that makes living things into indestructible monsters. Gru must work with Lucy, from the AVL, to find the chemical before it lands in the wrong hands.

Aren’t the minions super adorable? I believe the star of Despicable Me was Agnes, with her “it’s-so-fluffy-I’m-gonna-die!” love for stuffed unicorns. Agnes is still fiercely protective of her unicorns but the star of the show is now the brightly coloured minions! They are super cute as laboratory assistants, getaway drivers, housemaids and firemen. I can’t wait for the Minions movie next year!

Boy: How come you’re so fat?
Gru: Because my house is made out of candy, and sometimes, I eat instead of facing my problems!

whitehousedownWHITE HOUSE DOWN (2013)
3 and a half out of 5 stars

John Cale (Channing Tatum), hoping to impress his his daughter, Emily, brings her for a tour at the White House during this interview for the Secret Service. However, a bomb detonates and father and daughter are separated while the White House is overtaken by a paramilitary group. It is up to John to save his daughter and the President (Jamie Foxx) when this turns out to be an inside job.

How many movies can you make about the White House? See: Olympus Has Fallen. Anyway, I didn’t catch that so I won’t be able to tell you which one is better though both Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum are plausible bodyguards/action heroes.

There’s never a dull moment and if you’re not worried about Channing Tatum, you’re worried about Joey King, who plays Emily. She is a prime example of our generation – using technology even though we are in mortal danger. Her final act really saved the day. That was a really smart move! Tatum and Foxx are quite a good team and even though they are being chased by big bad guys with big bad guns, they still have time to joke about and make sarcastic remarks. Lance Reddick from Fringe also stars along with Jason Clarke, last seen in Zero Dark Thirty and Gatsby.

President Sawyer: There’s some knives in the kitchen.
John Cale: Great. You can make me a sandwich.

PLEDGE OOZMA KAPPA!

monstersuniversityMONSTERS UNIVERSITY (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

This is the prequel to Monsters, Inc. and it tells the beginnings of the top scaring team – Mike and Sulley!

I’ve been looking forward to watching this and it does not disappoint! Mike and Sulley didn’t start off as friends. Mike being small and un-scary versus Sulley, who descended from a line of great scarers. When circumstances forces both of them to join forces to stay in the University, it results in an unexpected friendship.

The members of Oozma Kappa were really hilarious especially during the scene at the library. The team of oddballs can be very endearing. Baby Mike is really cute and he wears braces! There were many laughs especially during their training sessions. Other voices I recognized were Nathan Fillion’s (as Johnny) and John Krasinski’s (as Frank McCay).

Johnny: Enjoy the attention while it lasts, boys. After you lose, no one will remember you.
Mike: Maybe. But when you lose, no one will let you forget it.

BECOMING A GENTLEMAN

greatexpectations2012GREAT EXPECTATIONS (2012)
3 and a half out of 5 stars

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, the story revolves around Pip, an orphan, whose quality of life improves when he receives a sum of money from an anonymous benefactor.

I would jump at any chance to watch a classic brought to screen and this is no exception. Though I have only briefly read the book during primary school, I still remember bits and pieces of the story. While reading up this adaptation, I’ve heard many rave reviews about the BBC adaptation and hopefully I have the chance to watch it one day.

Holliday Grainger is delightful as Estella. She is really beautiful and I almost didn’t believe her when she said she had no heart. Jeremy Irvine is really handsome and the younger Pip really resembles him (played by Toby Irvine – his younger brother!). I suppose he did an acceptable job and my favourite scene is quoted below. Overall though, I didn’t feel my heart flutter as much as it should have.

Pip: You are part of my existence, part of myself. You have been in every line I have ever read. You have been in every prospect I have ever seen – on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea in the streets. You have been the embodiment of every graceful fancy that my mind has ever become accquainted with. The stones of which the strongest London buildings are made are not more real, or more impossible to be displaced by your hands, than your presence and influence have been to me, there and everywhere, and will be. To the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. But in this separation, I associate you only with the good, and I will faithfully hold you to that always, for you must have done me far more good than harm. Let me feel now what sharp distress I may.

YOU DON’T MESS WITH FAMILY

FF6FAST & FURIOUS 6 (2013)
3 and a half out of 5 stars

The gang is back!

Dom and the guys have retired after the events from Fast Five but reunite again when Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) offers to clear their names in exchange for taking down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who has been presumed dead.

There is definitely more action now. Gina Carano (Haywire) is Hobbs’ partner and she really packs a punch. But Michelle Rodriguez is not to be trifled with either.  The two of them plus Gal Gadot definitely give the fairer sex an edge. Too bad about Elsa Pataky, come on, give Mrs. Chris Hemsworth a chance to fight!

The franchise has always been about cars and we were treated to some cool cars, particularly those modified cars that Luke Evans drives. The biggest WTF moment happens at the highway with the tank. I will not reveal it so keep a lookout for it if you watch it. It is as unbelievable as it is jaw-dropping.

Comic relief comes mainly from Roman (Tyrese).

Roman: Better hide your baby oil.
Hobbs: Better hide your big-ass forehead.

THE MOST HOPEFUL MAN

greatgatsby-1THE GREAT GATSBY (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

Based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it follows the life of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his neighbour, Nick Carraway (Tobey McGuire) who recounts his encounter with Gatsby during his time in New York in the 1920’s. There is mystery surrounding Jay Gatsby, the businessman who holds extravagant parties yet no one seems to know anything concrete about him. But one thing is clear to Carraway; Gatsby is in love with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, whom he met in the past. However, she is now married. What follows is the doomed romance of Jay and Daisy, which could only seem to be wishful thinking on their part.

Like any Baz Luhrmann production, music plays a big part in the movies and audiences were treated to the likes of Lana del Rey, Florence and the Machine, Fergie and Jay-Z. It makes you feel like you’re at Gatsby’s parties.

I felt really sad after the movie ended. I’m not sure if Gatsby was really hopeful or deluded. Perhaps I’m too cynical for my own good but if I agreed with Carraway, I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels the same way. Or maybe I’m just not that into doomed romances anymore (that should be a good thing, right?).

I didn’t know Callan McAuliffe was in the movie as young Gatsby, or young Leo! What a striking resemblance! And I didn’t recognize Adelaide Clemens (Parade’s End) in the movie at all! I blame it on the eye makeup.

Jay Gatsby: I knew it was a great mistake for a man like me to fall in love…

DESTINY AT THE PINES

PBTPinesTHE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (2012)
3 out of 5 stars

Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a motorcycle stunt rider who discovers he has a son with a lover from the past and tries to earn more to provide for them. He decides to rob banks with a partner but his decision will change his life forever.

Isn’t this such a coincidence? I mean, after People magazine named Bradley Cooper the Sexiest Man Alive in 2o11 much to the chagrin and fury of everyone (mine included) who adores Ryan Gosling – here they are in the same movie! The way this story plays out doesn’t do the title justice – spoiler: somebody dies!

While the ladies enjoy Gosling’s wonder physique covered in his not-so-aesthetic tattoos (some of the fonts were really weird), the guys can ogle Eva Mendes.

Ultimately, I think the show is about karma. You do a bad deed and you do nothing about it… it will come back and bite you. Since the movie takes place over a period of 15 years (or more), it is rather draggy and often I wonder when is the movie going to end. But I like the car chases where Ryan Gosling’s character tries to out-run the cops – full of adrenaline rush! Can’t say the same for the rest of the movie though.

Robin: If you ride like lightning, you’re going to crash like thunder.
