WATCH IT BECAUSE…
1) It is a beautiful tale of how one girl changed the lives of the people around her in Germany during WWII.
2) The beautiful friendship between Liesel and Max as well as Liesel and Rudy.
3) It managed to make me tear a little towards the end and that’s a rare feat considering I’m quite desensitized to feelings these days.

1) Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes and directs.
2) How “love at first sight” is bullshit.
3) How pretty girls who’ve got the “package” are bullshit. You can talk about vacuuming with me anytime you want. Guys who vacuum are sexy as hell.
4) Get an inside look at how guys think and work the crowd. Well, guys who quote the below…

Don Jon: There’s only a few things I really care about in life. My body. My pad. My ride. My family. My church. My boys. My girls. My porn.

Caught this movie on a whim and it really surprised me with its laughs and heart. Well, two other reasons include all the delectable food featured and Tony Yang! I just wished they could air the movie in its original Hokkien language because some of the dubbing did Tony Yang’s voice a great injustice!

Anyway, this movie revolves around the dying culture of ‘ban doh’ (辦桌) which describes mobile chefs who whip up dinner banquets featuring traditional Taiwanese dishes. Xiao Wan (Lin Mei Hsiu) hopes to recreates her father’s dishes to fulfill an old couple’s wish of a traditional banquet and take part in the ‘ban doh’ competition. There is quite a nice backstory about the legends of ‘ban doh’ and also a running gag about this lady and her legendary fried bee hoon.

Nothing makes a girl happier than laughter, food and hotties. Plus, the song that Tony Yang keeps singing is damn funny!

STAY DURING THE CREDITS FOR HILARIOUS OUTTAKES and a cameo by Rhydian Vaughan!

WHAT MAKES A DRIVER

Rush2013RUSH (2013)

Still having F1 fever? Then this is the movie you should watch.

James Hunt: The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel. It’s a wonderful way to live. It’s the only way to drive.

This is the story of the rivalry/friendship (blurry lines between these two, if you ask me) between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 1970s.

Cue 70s hair! Hunt is more charismatic and knows his way amongst women (hello, Natalie Dormer!) while Lauda is more keen on the sport and improving his car to become a better driver. Their personal lives are also interesting to watch especially when you see how different Hunt and Lauda approach women.

Back then, F1 racing can be fatal and I guess it makes it more thrilling to watch. It’s even astonishing to see Lauda back in the race after suffering third-degree burns six weeks later. The movie climaxes at the 1976 Japan race where race conditions are not optimal and it tests the lengths these men would go to win the championship. Personally, it was a good watch and those engines really revved me up.

Niki Lauda: A wise man can learn more from his enemies than a fool from his friends.

ROBOTS, BLANKS AND SHELLS

4 out of 5 stars

Finally, the Cornetto trilogy comes to an end!

Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead made cop movies and zombie movies hilarious and now, The World’s End does the same to science fiction movies.

Gary King (Pegg), an alcoholic, resolves to track down his friends from high school to complete their epic pub crawl of 12 pubs back in their hometown of Newton Haven. Halfway through their pub crawl, they realize something is off about their town and set their way to make things right and leave the town in one piece and at the same time, drink a pint at each pub to complete their journey.

To me, the bromance of Pegg and Frost have always been the core of these films and it is proven here again. It is also fresh to see Martin Freeman not being so serious and W.T.F.-ing all the time. The way these guys smash aliens and fight them makes it very entertaining. Aliens have never been destroyed that comically before, right? I say, British humour is in a class of its own.

Oops, I guess I left this movie out though I’ve seen it long ago. It’s a great movie to watch after work because you just laugh your stress away.

David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) is a street drug dealer who has to smuggle marijuana out of Mexico when he loses his money and stash of drugs to street thugs. He enlists the help of stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston), teenage runaway Casey (Emma Roberts), and his virginal neighbour Kenny (Will Poulter), to pose as a family to reduce suspicion at the border. Hilarious hijinks ensue and my personal favourite is Kenny rapping along to TLC’s Waterfalls! Their encounter with the Fitzgeralds, another family traveling in a RV, kept things disturbing especially when Rose and Casey were giving Kenny tips on how to kiss girls.

It also shows that sometimes when your own family fails to live up to your expectations, making your own family can be better the real deal.

ALL THAT SPARKLES NEED MORE SPARKLES

BehindTheCandelabraBEHIND THE CANDELABRA (2013)
4 out of 5 stars

This is story of Liberace and his lover, Scott Thorson, based on his autobiographical novel.

I don’t know much about Liberace but I’ve certainly heard of him and his extravagant costumes. I did not know he was a pianist, only that he was a performer. This movie really opened my eyes because Michael Douglas has still got it. Audiences got a glimpse of this piano-playing skills and his va-va-voom house. Every item in his house is either an antique, golden, marble-like or it sparkles. Every item just screams luxury and indulgence! Personally, after watching this, I feel rather dull and unadorned because I’m not much of an accessories person. Overheard at the cinema, “I feel like buying rings after watching this”. True story.

What’s interesting is how he lured and seduced Scott Thorson into becoming his secret lover. First it’s the pool, then the Jacuzzi then it’s the bed. It’s all nice till Liberace requested Thorson to be a younger version of himself and engages a plastic surgeon to transform his looks. Even Rob Lowe transformed his looks to play the plastic surgeon. Creepy looks! This is like a forewarning for face lifts. Interesting movie to watch though it gets sad towards the end when their relationship gets ugly.

HIDDEN MEMORIES OF MAGIC

TMI1THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES (2013)

Jace Wayland: My hair is naturally blonde… Just for the record.

Based on The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, we are introduced to the world of Shadowhunters through Clary (Lily Collins), who discovers she’s one of them on her 18th birthday. Her mother is missing and her world is invaded by monsters searching for the Mortal Cup, which has the power of creating more Shadowhunters, allowing humans who drink from the Cup to become half-Angels.

Clary Fray: Is this the part where you start tearing off strips of your shirt to bind my wounds?
Jace Wayland: If you wanted me to rip my clothes off, you should have just asked.

It is pretty obvious Jace has a sense of humour and he has some of the best lines in the movie. I have never read the book but if what I’ve seen is already so rich, I’ll bet what I’ll read will definitely make me go crazy. The movie sure doesn’t shy from kid-friendly content because the audience is introduced to demon dogs early in the movie. Scariest canine ever – comparable to those vampire dogs from Blade: Trinity.

Clary Fray: Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?
Jace Wayland: Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself.
Clary Fray: At least, you don’t have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland.
Jace Wayland: Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting

There’s a slight twist towards the end which leads me to think that only Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Lena Headey could produce such beautiful offspring. The wonder of genes. Godfrey Gao stars as Magnus Bane, a party-loving and pants-hating warlock. Hurray for Asian talent in such a big production! Totally looking forward to the sequel because there are simply too many books in the series!

One last thing: how hot is Aidan Turner?!

TMI-Luke
